About the firm
Cook & Company Accountancy Corporation is led by its founder and principal, Douglas E. Cook, PhD, CPA, MPA, whose accounting experience has been mainly with nonprofits. He holds an MPA in nonprofit finance from San Francisco State University, teaches Nonprofit Financial Management in its Nonprofit Management Certificate Program, and is a member of the AICPA, its Not-for-Profit Section and the California Society of CPAs.
Who it works with
The firm works only with California nonprofits, mainly small and medium-sized organizations, from an office at One Sansome Street in San Francisco.
Services and how engagements work
The firm calls audits its flagship service. Audit work includes advice on internal controls such as separating duties, tracking donor-restricted funds and allocating expenses to functions, and ends with a report that includes a full set of audited financial statements. For smaller organizations whose funders and legal requirements allow it, the firm performs financial reviews and adds a management letter summarizing its findings and recommendations. Its Form 990 work covers issues such as public support tests, lobbying, non-cash contributions and donor recognition. Its site does not mention Single Audits, so ask if you spend federal awards.
Fees
Cook & Company does not publish prices. You can book a call from its website, and it sends a free monthly newsletter for nonprofits, Cook & the Books.

Before you hire an auditor
- License in your state. Audits are performed by licensed CPA firms. Confirm the firm can practice in your state, especially if it works with you remotely.
- Peer review. Ask for the firm’s most recent peer review report.
- Single Audit. If your organization expends $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year, it needs a Single Audit under 2 CFR 200.501. Ask whether the firm performs them.
- Scope and fee. Ask what the engagement letter covers (audit, Form 990, management letter) and how the fee is set.
Details come from the Cook & Company website, checked October 8, 2026.
